Green Tomatoes

The temperature here can get to as low as 28 degree F during the night. My poor tomato plants didn't survived the cold. I picked lots of them last night and they are mostly green. Now, with all this green tomatoes I don't know what to do with it. Should I make some fried green tomatoes or some salsa.
I picked these last week

This was the first time I plant tomato and I am glad that it turn out really well . The 5 tomatoes plant has given me lots of tomatoes. I harvested some really huge ones and some small sweet ones too. I've given away quite a bit to my neighbor too. The only down side of all this was the tomato 'Hornworms' Is giving me the goose bums just thinking about it. Other than that it was pretty easy to plant them. Rita, any plan to plant some next year?

Back to the green tomatoes. Any suggestions what I can do with it?

Haha! Gert, I have plans because David loves tomatoes but now that you reminded us of those worms, I am not so sure. Wrigglers and I don't get along! I am shuddering as I type. :(

Besides being raw, do the green tomatoes have any particular taste?

Rita, don't worry too much about the worms. Hero David will come to the rescue :) :) just like Carlos came to rescue me :) :)

Rita, I don't really like green tomatoes. Is too sour for me but some people do like fried green tomatoes.

Gert ... Is it possible to pickle them? I know nothing about such things but just remembered my aunt pickling her raw papayas. They are probably supposed to be raw! Anyway, your green tomatoes look too good to be thrown away.

I heard from Cath that you have a cough too? Take care!

Gert,
How about making spicey tomato chutney with the green tomatoes? My English friends make them every end of summer with the tomatoes they hurriedly picked before the frost hit.

Gert, I loved those small cherry tomatoes. They were so delicious and sweet! Now I've learnt a new way to make salad...olive oil first, then only balsamic vinegar. Carlos swears by that method! :)

Anyhow, sorry about the plants. Guess that's what the cycle of life is all about - when something dies, something else will grow. It makes one look forward to it.

Spring, I heard, should be beautiful.

Rita, I am not sure about pickle. It might get really mushy. I am ok. Thanks :)

SC, I am going to leave it for a few days and see if it gets ripe if not making chutney is not a bad idea at all. Thanks for the suggestion.

Pinky, remember it was still ok when we look at it from the deck but overnight it was all gone. Look forward to next year :) :)

So you learn making tomato salad from Carlos :) :) Hope you make some back home.

Gert, I lay them on a newspaper on my concrete basement which is dark. It will slowly ripen hence turn red. Imagine eating fresh tomatoes in December.. what a delight!!!! An old lady taught me what to do with green tomatoes. I usually pluck them before the first frost. Hope that helps.

Gert, I didn't know you wasn't feeling well. Do stay warm inside.
Have you decided what you want to do with your green tomato?
I like my green tomato sliced and pan fried with some salt and pepper. Thinking about it make my mouth watering. Yumm yumm.

PJ, nanti I cuba :)

Zue, I dah baik dah. Thank you. Kalau you suka green tomato nanti you datang you can take some home. I don't think it will get red anytime soon :) :)

Gert, has some of the tomatoes turned red? Don't worry, if it hasn't it will slowly turn red.. something you want to happen tat way you get your garden grown tomatoes to eat later. An old german lady who grew up in a farm taught me this "trick". Something about the dark and cold air tat makes it ripen slowly.

JOAT, non of them is red yet and some of them has black spot on it. I hope they will get red soon :)Thanks for all the tips.
